Lexi Brewer
Birth Doula
Hello! I’m Lexi. I grew up watching rocket launches at home on the Space Coast and spending summers exploring the world with family and friends in Israel, England, and Europe. After graduating from high school in 2005, I attended George Mason University, where I received my bachelor’s degree in Global Affairs. I then sold all my worldly possessions (i.e. my car) and moved to Seoul, South Korea to pursue my love for travel while teaching English to kindergarteners.
After completing my one-year contract there, I spent a month backpacking southeast Asia with a friend until we happened upon Koh Tao, Thailand. I fell in love with SCUBA diving, the island, and the dive culture so much that I canceled my return ticket, stayed for 3 extra months, became a PADI certified divemaster, and guided dives with a dive shop on the island.
When that adventure came to an end and I finally did return home, I found myself falling in a different kind of love than I had felt for travel and diving; I was falling in love with my future husband, a hunky aerospace engineering master’s student from New Orleans named Jared. Together, we moved to Dayton, Ohio, where he took his first engineering job, and I completed my Master’s in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). We moved back to this area in 2014 when Jared began working at the Cape, and I began teaching ESL and writing classes at Florida Tech, where I still teach classes twice per week.
On January 5th, 2019, I realized yet another dimension of love as we welcomed our daughter, Emery, into our lives. Laboring her into the world was the hardest work (47 hours!) and most marvelous work (just wait till you see her cheeks!) I have ever had the honor of doing. The experience showed me that childbirth can be both raw and serene, intense and deeply meditative, and challenging and joyous; it made me the least in-control and most powerful being. It broke down every wall within me and every mind block, again, and again, and again, and again, until there was nothing left of me—my body surrendered, transforming into pure energy without form, pure energy that built, and built, and built until it was so intense that my person burned whole and my baby breathed life.
It was in the afterglow of Emery’s birth that I realized my passion for childbirth and started my journey as a doula. It was one of those things that just felt unquestionably right. So here I am. I completed my DONA international birth doula training workshop and breastfeeding workshop in May 2019, I’m reading every birth and post-partum related text I can get my hands on, I’ll observe several birth education courses by the end of the year including a hypnobirthing and a Hypnobabies course, and I’m offering donation only services for due dates between November 2019 and May 2020. Thank you for reading my story. If you’re up for it, I would love to hear yours!
